Week of June 1st, 2026

Reading

In reading this week we will be reading Welcome Home, Bear (Fiction) and Black Bears (Informational Text).  Students will identify characters, setting, and main events in fiction.  The focus letter will be the letter Bb (Benny Bear). Our reader this week will be Summer Fun.  This week we will be working on the following words: because, juts, pick, play, have, there, we, in.

Math

In math this week we will draw pictures and write equations to represent addition and subtraction stories. In addition, when looking at a story problem we will decide whether we must add or subtract for that problem.

Let’s Find Out

Our Let’s Find Out this week will be Only in Happy Birthday, U.S.A.! Children will discuss how people celebrate the Fourth of July.

End of School Picnic

The K4 / K5 End of Year Picnic will be Monday, June 15 at 11:00 AM

This will be a fun parent-led celebration of our K4 & K5 students!

Students and their families are invited.

What’s happening:

  • Food, drinks, and games for the kids
  • Celebrate our amazing K4 & K5 students.
  • Meet and mingle with other families.

Important Notes:

  • This event is organized by parents, not the school or teachers.
  • Parents are actively contacting local businesses for contributions, so the Sign Up Genius list may change depending on donations.

Our reader this week will be A Frog’s Life.  This week we will be working on the following words: all, into, make, time, is, has, it.

Zoo Field Trip – June 12th

Field Trip – Milwaukee County Zoo

Whittier Elementary School
Kindergarten Zoo Field Trip

On Friday, June 12th, the K4 / K5 classrooms will be going to the Zoo to participate in a field trip. The Milwaukee County Zoo is located at 10001 W Bluemound Rd, Milwaukee WI 53226. The field trip is to provide students with an outside experience to explore different animals at the zoo. During our field trip the students will participate in a phonics scavenger hunt for animals at the Zoo. There is a cost of $11 per student and a cost of $14 for chaperones. Zoo Passes can’t be used for field trips.

We will leave Whittier School at 9:30 AM and return at approximately 1:30 PM. Students will need to bring a bag lunch with juice / milk in a disposable bag labeled with their name (no refrigeration will be available).

All students must travel to and from the zoo on the field trip bus.

Please fill out and return the bottom portion of this slip as well as the attached field trip slip by Thursday, May 21st.

In math this week we will be working on identifying shapes as flat or solid. We will also be making pictures with two-dimensional shapes and build objects with three-dimensional shapes.

Field Trip – Oak Ridge Farm

Whittier Elementary School
K5 Oak Ridge Farm Field Trip

On Wednesday, May 6th, the K5 class will be going to Oakridge Farm to participate in a Learning Journey.  Oak Ridge Farm is located at S43 W35961 Highway C, in Dousman, WI.  The “Farm” Learning Journey is to assist students in understanding how the farm is important to the community.   There is no cost for this trip.

We will leave Whittier School at 8:45 a.m. and return at approximately 1:45 p.m.  Students will need to bring a bag lunch with a juice/milk in a disposable bag.

All students must travel to and from The Oak Ridge Farm on the field trip bus.

Please fill out and return the bottom portion of this slip as well as the attached field trip slip by Thursday, April 23rd.
